Midori (1971-…) is a Japanese violinist who has been performing internationally since she was a child. Midori made her debut at the age of 11 in 1982 with the New York Philharmonic. She has since performed with leading orchestras throughout the world.
Midori’s repertoire includes the major works for violin, notably concertos and sonatas by such composers as Samuel Barber of the United States, Béla Bartók of Hungary, Felix Mendelssohn of Germany, Jean Sibelius of Finland, and Dimitri Shostakovich and Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky of Russia. Midori has also performed chamber music with the leading instrumentalists in classical music.
Midori Goto was born on Oct. 25, 1971, in Osaka, Japan. She began taking violin lessons with her mother at the age of 4. Midori received a scholarship to study at the Aspen Music School in the United States in 1981. In 1982, she entered the Juilliard School in New York City. She became a member of the violin faculty at the Manhattan School of Music in 2001.
Midori has established an educational foundation called Midori & Friends to encourage cultural diversity and bring classical music to schoolchildren in New York City. She also sponsors a similar organization for children and young adults in Japan.
