Morgan, Junius Spencer

Morgan, Junius Spencer (1813-1890), was an American banker who founded the Morgan financial empire. As a young man, he made a fortune as a merchant and banker. In 1854, he became a partner in the London banking firm of George Peabody and Company. The firm was later renamed J. S. Morgan and Company, and it became a famous international banking house. Over the years, J. S. Morgan and Company worked closely with several United States-based firms in which Morgan’s son J. P. Morgan was a leading partner.

Junius Spencer Morgan was born in West Springfield, Massachusetts, on April 14, 1813. He died in Monte Carlo, Monaco, on April 8, 1890.
