Plaid Cymru

Plaid Cymru, << plyd KUHM ree, >> is one of the most popular political parties in Wales. Its name is Welsh for Party of Wales. Plaid Cymru calls for the independence of Wales from the United Kingdom. The party traditionally has drawn heavy support from people in Welsh-speaking rural areas of northern and central Wales.

The National Party of Wales was founded in 1925 and later changed its name to Plaid Cymru. The party first won a seat in the British Parliament in 1966. During the late 1900’s, Wales and other divisions of the United Kingdom gained increased political powers through a process called devolution. In 1997, the people of Wales voted to form an elected government body of their own. In 1999, the National Assembly for Wales was established with 60 elected members, 17 of whom were members of Plaid Cymru.

Although the British Parliament retains its rights to make laws for Wales, the National Assembly for Wales is responsible for many matters, including education, health, and transportation. However, the Assembly cannot alter laws or raise taxes. Members of Plaid Cymru believe that Wales should be able to govern itself without the involvement of the United Kingdom.

Plaid Cymru supports economic reform, educational advancement, energy and environmental conservation, equal rights for all people, and the preservation of the Welsh language and culture. The party also wants Wales to become a full member of the European Union and the United Nations. Wales is currently represented in both organizations through the United Kingdom’s membership.
