Roddick, Andy

Roddick, Andy (1982-…), an American tennis star, won the men’s title at the US Open in 2003. The same year, he reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and Wimbledon championships. Roddick finished the 2003 season ranked first in the world in men’s tennis. Roddick became known for his strong all-around game, especially his powerful serve, which reached a speed of more than 150 miles (241 kilometers) per hour.

Andrew Stephen Roddick was born on Aug. 30, 1982, in Omaha, Nebraska. He was a dominant player in junior tennis, finishing number one in the world as a junior in 2000. He won six junior singles titles and seven junior doubles titles before turning professional in 2000 at the age of 17. Roddick announced his retirement as a player in 2012.
