Krone, Julie

Krone, Julie (1963-…), an American jockey, became the most successful female jockey in horse racing history. Krone was the first female jockey to win a Triple Crown race, riding Colonial Affair to victory in the 1993 Belmont Stakes. Krone was also the first female jockey to win a Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championship, riding Halfbridled to the 2003 championship in the Juvenile Fillies race. In 2000, Krone was the first female jockey elected to Thoroughbred racing’s Hall of Fame.

Julieanne Louise Krone was born on July 24, 1963, in Benton Harbor, Michigan. She quit high school to become a professional jockey. From 1981 to 1999, Krone won 3,545 races, more than any other female jockey. Of those victories, 276 were in stakes races. She retired in April 1999 but returned to racing in November 2002. Krone wrote Riding for My Life (1995), a candid autobiography recounting her personal life and career.
