AC Milan is a leading soccer club in Italy. Soccer is called football in many countries. AC Milan competes in Serie A, the top Italian league. The team plays its home games at San Siro stadium in Milan. AC stands for Associazione Calcio, which means football association. In 2022, the team won its 19th Serie A title. AC Milan has also won several international championships. They include the European Cup in 1963, 1969, 1989, and 1990; and the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Champions League in 1994, 2003, and 2007. The European Cup became the UEFA Champions League beginning with the 1992-93 season. AC Milan also won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2007. FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association. FIFA is soccer’s world governing body.
Many international soccer stars have played for AC Milan. They include Ghanaian-born defender Marcel Desailly of France; defenders Alessandro Costacurta, Franco Baresi, and Paolo Maldini, and midfielder Andrea Pirlo, of Italy; forwards Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten of the Netherlands; and attacking midfielder and forward Kaká of Brazil. The team’s most successful managers include Carlo Ancelotti, Fabio Capello, Nereo Rocco, and Arrigo Sacchi. AC Milan was established in 1899.
