Chevron Corporation is one of the world’s largest petroleum companies. The company participates in all aspects of the production of petroleum, including exploration, refining, delivery, and the operation of service stations. It also produces natural gas and natural gas products, and operates facilities for generating electric power. Chevron has operations in more than 180 countries. The company is headquartered in San Ramon, California.
Chevron was founded in 1879 as the Pacific Coast Oil Company. Pacific Coast Oil became part of the Standard Oil Company (California) in 1906. This company was renamed Standard Oil Company of California in 1926. In 1984, the company merged with Gulf Oil Corp., nearly doubling its worldwide proved oil and gas reserves, and its name was changed to Chevron Corporation. In 2001, Chevron merged with Texaco Inc., another major petroleum company, to form ChevronTexaco Corporation. ChevronTexaco was renamed Chevron Corporation in 2005.
