Rangers Football Club is a leading Scottish soccer club in Glasgow. Soccer is called football in Scotland and many other countries. The Rangers compete in the Scottish Premiership, Scotland’s highest soccer league. The club plays its home games in Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow. Along with the Celtic Football Club, also in Glasgow, the Rangers have dominated Scottish soccer for more than 100 years. During that time, the two clubs have developed one of the most intense rivalries in European soccer. In domestic competition, the Rangers have won Scotland’s highest league 55 times, more than any other club. In international competition, the Rangers won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1972.
After years of financial troubles, a London firm took control of the club’s finances in 2012, and the Rangers were sold to a new owner. The club had been playing in the Scottish Premier League, then the leading league in Scotland. Because of the change in ownership, the Rangers were forced to reapply for membership in the league. The application was rejected. The Rangers then successfully applied to play in the fourth level of Scottish football for the 2012-2013 season. After winning the title for two consecutive years, the club was promoted to the second level league, the Scottish Championship. In 2016, the Rangers won the Scottish Championship title, earning their way back to the Scottish Premiership. The 2020-2021 Rangers team won the Scottish league title with an undefeated season. The Rangers finished the season with 32 wins and 6 ties.
Many top British players have played for the Rangers, including midfielder and manager Graeme Souness, forward Ally McCoist, midfielder Jim Baxter, and defender John Greig, all of Scotland; and midfielder Paul Gascoigne of England. The Rangers were officially founded in 1873.
