Jagr, Jaromir

Jagr, Jaromir, << YAH gihr, YAHR oh meer >> (1972-…), became one of the world’s great professional hockey players. Jagr was born in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) and played on the Czech team that won the gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. He was a star right wing for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL) for 11 seasons and helped Pittsburgh win the Stanley Cup in 1991 and 1992. Jagr led the NHL in scoring five times and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player for the 1998-1999 season. In the 1995-1996 season, he set the single-season record for most points (149) and most assists (87) by a right winger.

After the 2004-2005 NHL season was cancelled because of a labor dispute, Jagr played in the Czech Republic and in Russia. He played on the Czech Republic team that won the gold medal at the 2005 world championships and was named the country’s 2005 Player of the Year.

Jagr was born on Feb. 15, 1972, in Kladno, Czechoslovakia. He played for the Poldi Kladno team in the Czechoslovakian League in the 1988-1989 and 1989-1990 seasons. In 1990, he played on the Czech national team in the World Junior Championships. Pittsburgh selected him as the fifth player taken in the 1990 NHL draft. The Penguins traded him to the Washington Capitals in 2001. He was traded to the New York Rangers in 2004. Jagr played for the Rangers until 2008, when he left the NHL and played three seasons for Avangard Omsk, a Russian team in the Kontinental Hockey League of Asia and Eastern Europe.

Jagr returned to the NHL in 2011, playing for the Philadelphia Flyers. He played with the Dallas Stars of the NHL in 2012 and 2013, when Dallas traded him to the Boston Bruins. Jagr played with the Bruins during the 2012-2013 season and the New Jersey Devils during the 2013-2014 season. He played with the Florida Panthers from 2014 to 2017 and then joined the Calgary Flames for the 2017-2018 season. In January 2018, the Flames assigned Jagr to the HC (Hockey Club) Kladno Knights, a team he owns in the Czech Republic.
