Dionne, Marcel, << dee AWN, mahr SEHL >> (1951-…), a Canadian hockey star, ranks among the greatest goal scorers in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL). During his 18 years in the league, Dionne scored 731 goals, which ranks fourth behind Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, and Brett Hull. Dionne also had 1,040 assists. He scored more than 100 points in each of eight seasons and led the league in scoring in 1979-1980. He won the Lester B. Pearson Award as the NHL’s Outstanding Player in 1978-1979 and 1979-1980. The popular and outgoing Dionne also won the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship in 1974-1975 and 1976-1977.

Dionne was born on Aug. 3, 1951, in Drummondville, Quebec. He starred in junior hockey for three seasons before the Detroit Red Wings drafted him as the second player taken in the 1971 NHL draft. Dionne played with Detroit for four seasons before signing as a free agent with the Los Angeles Kings in 1975. He was traded to the New York Rangers during the 1986-1987 season and retired in 1989. Dionne was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.
