Liverpool was especially dominant in English soccer from the 1960’s through the 1980’s under managers Bill Shankly (1959-1974), Bob Paisley (1974-1983), Joe Fagan (1983-1985), and Kenny Dalglish (1985-1991). Domestically, Liverpool has won the league championship 19 times and the FA (Football Association) Cup 8 times. In international competition, the club won the European Cup in 1977, 1978, 1981, and 1984, and the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Champions League in 2005 and 2019. The European Cup became the UEFA Champions League beginning with the 1992-93 season. Liverpool also won the UEFA Cup in 1973, 1976, and 2001, and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2019. FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association. FIFA is soccer’s world governing body. Star players for Liverpool have included Steven Gerrard, Roger Hunt, and Kevin Keegan of England; Ian Rush of Wales; Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen of Scotland; and Mohamed Salah of Egypt. The club was established in 1892.
