Singh, Vijay << sihng, VEE jay >> (1963-…), a Fijian-born golfer, was one of the leading competitors on the professional golf tour. Singh held the number one ranking among male professional golfers for 32 weeks in 2004 and 2005. He replaced American golfer Tiger Woods, who had held the ranking for more than five years. Singh has won two of the four major tournaments, the United States PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association of America) Championship in 1998 and 2004 and the Masters Tournament in 2000. The other two “majors” are the United States Open and the British Open.
Singh was born on Feb. 22, 1963, in Lautoka, Fiji, to parents of Indian ancestry. His first name means “Victory” in the Hindi language of India. Singh became a professional golfer in 1982 and played for several years in Asia, Africa, and Europe. His first international victory was the Malaysian PGA Championship in 1984. Singh joined the American PGA tour in 1993 and was named Rookie of the Year.
