Iginla << ih GIHN luh >> , Jarome (1977-…), a Canadian hockey star, was one of the leading goal scorers in the National Hockey League (NHL). Iginla played right wing. During the 2001-2002 season, while playing for the Calgary Flames, he led the NHL in goals scored (52) and total points (96). Iginla also won the Lester B. Pearson Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Player that season. Iginla tied for the league lead in goals scored (41) for the 2003-2004 season with two other players.
In international play, Iginla led Canada to the gold medal in the 1996 World Junior Hockey Championships. He helped lead Canada to the gold medal in the 2002 Winter Olympic Games and to the winner’s trophy in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey championship. He was also named to Canada’s hockey team for the 2006 Olympics.
Iginla was born on July 1, 1977, in Edmonton, Alberta. He played three seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 1993 to 1996, scoring 102 goals in 183 games. He was named the WHL Player of the Year for the 1995-1996 season. The Dallas Stars selected Iginla as the 11th player in the 1995 NHL entry draft and traded him to Calgary. Iginla made his NHL regular season debut in the autumn of 1996 and was runner-up to Bryan Berard of the New York Islanders as the league’s most outstanding rookie for the 1996-1997 season. Calgary traded Iginla to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2013. He was signed as a free agent by the Boston Bruins in the summer of 2013, and then as a free agent by the Colorado Avalanche in the summer of 2014. Colorado traded him to the Los Angeles Kings in 2017. Iginla retired after the 2017-2018 season.
