Krzyzewski << kshuh SHEHF skee >>, Mike (1947-…), was one of the most successful coaches in American college basketball history. From 1980 to 2022, Krzyzewski was the head coach at Duke University, where his teams won National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships in 1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, and 2015. On Nov. 15, 2011, Krzyzewski won his 903rd game as a head coach, breaking Bob Knight’s Division I record. That division of the NCAA consists of the schools with the best college basketball programs. On Jan. 25, 2015, Krzyzewski won his 1,000th game, the first male college coach to win that many games at any division level. He retired in 2022 with 1,202 victories.
Krzyzewski coached numerous All-American players at Duke, including Shane Battier, Elton Brand, Johnny Dawkins, Danny Ferry, Grant Hill, Christian Laettner, J. J. Redick, Jay Williams, and Zion Williamson. Krzyzewski coached the United States national team to gold medals in the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Summer Olympic Games. He described his experiences with the 2008 team in The Gold Standard: Building a World-Class Team (2009).
Michael William Krzyzewski was born on Feb. 13, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended the United States Military Academy from 1965 through 1969, and played on the basketball team his last three years there. Krzyzewski served as an officer in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1974. He then began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Indiana University under Bob Knight, his coach at the Military Academy. Krzyzewski served as head coach of the Military Academy from 1975 to 1980, when he moved to Duke. Krzyzewski was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001. He retired from coaching at the end of the 2021-2022 season.
