Agricultural Research Service is a scientific research agency of the United States government. The agency, sometimes called the ARS, conducts research in a variety of areas related to food and agriculture. Major areas of research include nutrition, food quality and safety, livestock and crop production, and the conservation of natural resources. The ARS also addresses such issues as protecting the food supply from pests and disease and defining the nutritional needs of people.
The ARS was founded in 1953. It is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The agency operates numerous research locations throughout the United States. Its headquarters are in Washington, D.C.
