Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, is the headquarters of the Peterson-Schriever Garrison, part of the United States Space Force. The garrison supports the Space Force operations at five U.S. Air Force bases and stations in the United States, and at additional locations around the world. The Peterson Space Force Base covers 1,295 acres (524 hectares) just east of Colorado Springs. Three space deltas are headquartered at Peterson. Space deltas are units trained for a specific mission. The Colorado Springs area is also home to Schriever Space Force Base, Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station, the United States Air Force Academy , and the Fort Carson Army Post.
Peterson Space Force Base also serves as headquarters for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the U.S. Northern Command, a unified command of the U.S. Air Force, Army, and Navy. In addition, it includes the Peterson Air and Space Museum. The base developed from the Colorado Springs Army Air Base, which was established in 1942. It is named in honor of Edward Peterson, a U.S. Army pilot who died in a plane crash the same year. In 2021, the base, which had previously been called Peterson Air Force Base, was designated as Peterson Space Force Base.
