Dubai was a small fishing town, pearling center, and port until the discovery of large oil deposits there in 1966. The oil industry helped develop the city’s economy. Dubai is now a financial and shipping center with a multinational population. Tourism and construction are important parts of the economy. The Mall of the Emirates is one of the world’s largest shopping centers. The Burj Khalifa (Khalifa Tower) opened in 2010. At a height of 2,716 feet (828 meters), it ranks as the world’s tallest building.
