Murray, Bill (1950-…), is an American actor who became famous for his wisecracking, cynical comic performances on television and in motion pictures. Murray starred in several of the most popular movie comedies of the late 1900’s, including Caddyshack (1980), Stripes (1981), Ghostbusters (1984), and Groundhog Day (1993). Later in his career, Murray won praise for his acting in more serious movie roles. He won an Emmy Award in 2015 for best supporting actor for his performance in the television limited series (formerly called miniseries) Olive Kitteridge.
William James Murray was born on Sept. 21, 1950, in Wilmette, Illinois. He broke into comedy in 1973 when he joined the famous Second City comedy troupe in Chicago, where his brother Brian Doyle-Murray was a member. Murray then worked on the “National Lampoon Radio Hour” and the “National Lampoon Show” stage show.
Murray gained national popularity as a member of the famous satirical TV show “Saturday Night Live” from 1977 to 1980. Murray’s first significant movie comedy was Meatballs (1979). His other films include Scrooged (1988); What About Bob? (1991); Mad Dog and Glory (1993); Ed Wood (1994); Kingpin (1996); Rushmore (1998); The Royal Tenenbaums (2001); Lost in Translation (2003); Broken Flowers (2005); City of Ember (2008); Get Low (2009); A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III (2012); Moonrise Kingdom (2012); Hyde Park on Hudson (2012), in which he portrayed American President Franklin D. Roosevelt; The Monuments Men and St. Vincent (both 2014); and Rock the Casbah (2015). Bill Murray also provided his voice for the character of Baloo the Bear in the Walt Disney adventure film The Jungle Book (2016), a remake of Disney’s classic 1967 animated feature. In addition to Brian Doyle-Murray, Bill Murray’s other brothers, Joel and John, are also actors.
