Clooney, George (1961-…), is a popular American actor and motion-picture director. He became internationally famous in movies as a handsome leading man after first establishing his reputation by acting on television. Clooney won an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in the movie Syriana (2005).

George Timothy Clooney was born on May 6, 1961, in Lexington, Kentucky. He is the nephew of the singer Rosemary Clooney and the actor José Ferrer. George Clooney began acting as a young man, mainly in a number of TV series. During the 1980’s and 1990’s, he appeared on the programs “E/R,” “The Facts of Life,” “Roseanne,” “Bodies of Evidence,” and others. His early movies included Grizzly II: Revenge (1983) and Return to Horror High (1987).

From 1994 to 1999, Clooney had a starring role as a doctor on the TV series “ER.” He then left television acting to concentrate on motion-picture roles. Clooney’s popularity on “ER” led to starring roles in major films, beginning with the comic thriller From Dusk Till Dawn (1996).

Clooney’s other movie acting credits include One Fine Day (1996); Batman & Robin (1997); Out of Sight (1998); Three Kings (1999); and The Perfect Storm and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (both 2000). He also appeared in Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Intolerable Cruelty (2003), Ocean’s Twelve (2004), The Good German (2006), Ocean’s Thirteen and Michael Clayton (both 2007), Burn After Reading (2008), The Men Who Stare at Goats and Up in the Air (both 2009), and The American (2010). Clooney’s later films include The Descendants (2011); Gravity (2013); Tomorrowland (2015); Hail, Caesar! and Money Monster (both 2016); and Ticket to Paradise (2022). Clooney also provided the voice of Mr. Fox in the animated movie Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), based on a book by Roald Dahl.

Clooney both acted in and directed Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002); Good Night, and Good Luck (2005); Leatherheads (2008); The Ides of March (2011); The Monuments Men (2014); and The Midnight Sky (2020). He also co-wrote some of these films.

From 2008 to 2014, Clooney served as a United Nations (UN) peace envoy, promoting peacekeeping activities around the world. In 2022, he became a Kennedy Center honoree. The Kennedy Center Honors are awarded for contributions to American culture through the performing arts.
