Deschamps, Marie

Deschamps, << day SHAHMP, >> Marie (1952-…), served as a puisne (associate) justice of the Supreme Court of Canada from 2002 to 2012. Prime Minister Jean Chrétien appointed her to the court. Prior to her appointment, Deschamps served on the Quebec Court of Appeal, the highest court in that province. She is noted for her expertise in commercial law.

Deschamps was born in Repentigny, Quebec, on Oct. 2, 1952. She earned a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Montreal in 1974. She was admitted to the Quebec Bar—that is, the body of lawyers who have a license to practice law in Quebec—in 1975. In 1983, Deschamps received a master’s degree in law from McGill University.

In the 1970’s and 1980’s, Deschamps worked at a number of private law firms. During that time, she specialized in administrative, civil, and commercial law. In 1990, Deschamps was appointed to the Quebec Superior Court. Two years later, she was appointed to the Quebec Court of Appeal, where she served until 2002. Deschamps retired from the Supreme Court of Canada in August 2012.
