Foxx, Jamie (1967-…), is a popular American actor, comedian, and singer. Foxx won the 2005 Academy Award as best actor for his performance as singer-musician Ray Charles in the film Ray (2004). Foxx is also a successful stand-up comedian and rhythm and blues singer.
Foxx was born on Dec. 13, 1967, in Terrell, Texas, and was raised by his grandparents. His real name was Eric Morlon Bishop. He began his show-business career as a nightclub comedian in 1989 and changed his name to Jamie Foxx at that time. Foxx became a television star during the 1990’s. He appeared on the popular TV variety show “In Living Color” from 1991 to 1994 and on the comedy series “Roc” in 1993 and 1994. He starred in his own TV comedy series, “The Jamie Foxx Show,” from 1996 to 2001.
Foxx made his motion-picture debut in Toys in 1992. His other films include The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996), The Players Club (1998), Any Given Sunday (1999), Ali (2001), Collateral (2004), Jarhead (2005), Miami Vice and Dreamgirls (both 2006), The Kingdom (2007), The Soloist and Law Abiding Citizen (both 2009), Due Date and Valentine’s Day (both 2010), Horrible Bosses (2011), Django Unchained (2012), White House Down (2013), and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Annie (both 2014).
Foxx made his first musical album, Peep This, in 1994. His album Unpredictable (2005) sold more than 1 million copies.
