Nash, Steve (1974-…), was a star player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Nash stands 6 feet 3 inches (191 centimeters) tall and played guard. He was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons. Nash was one of the NBA’s outstanding playmakers, leading the league in assists for five seasons—2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2009-2010, and 2010-2011. His career total of 10,335 assists and free throw percentage of 90.4 rank among the highest in NBA history.
Stephen John Nash was born on Feb. 7, 1974, in Johannesburg, South Africa, where his father was a professional soccer player. His family moved to Canada when Nash was a baby, and he grew up in Victoria, British Columbia. Nash played college basketball at Santa Clara University in California, graduating in 1996.
The Phoenix Suns selected Nash as the 15th player chosen in the 1996 NBA draft. Phoenix traded him to the Dallas Mavericks in 1998, and he played in Dallas until he signed as a free agent to play in Phoenix again in 2004. Phoenix traded Nash to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2012. Nash was voted Canadian male athlete of the year in 2005 and 2006. He retired in 2015. Nash was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018. From 2020 to 2022, Nash served as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.
