Cirque du Soleil << seerk doo soh LAY >> is an entertainment organization that originated a new style of circus in the 1980’s. The name is French for Circus of the Sun. Cirque du Soleil emphasizes modern technology, striking special effects, dramatic lighting, and imaginative costumes. Unlike traditional circuses, Cirque du Soleil does not include animals or a ringmaster. Instead of the brass band of conventional circuses, Cirque has live music performed by singers and a band that emphasizes electronic instruments. Unlike typical circuses, many Cirque shows have a plot or story. However, Cirque does feature such traditional circus acts as acrobats, clowns, and aerialists.
Cirque du Soleil originated in Quebec City, Canada, in 1984, and now has headquarters in Montreal. Beginning as a single touring company, today Cirque du Soleil produces numerous traveling shows that perform throughout the world. There are also several shows in permanent residence in Las Vegas and a permanent show in Orlando, Florida.
