Henin, Justine

Henin, Justine, << eh nan, zhoo steen >> (1982-…), a Belgian tennis star, became a dominant player on the professional women’s tour. Henin finished the season ranked number one in the world three times, in 2003, 2006, and 2007. She won three of the four grand slam titles. She won the US Open in 2003 and 2007, the Australian Open in 2004, and the French Open in 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007. The only grand slam title Henin did not win was the Wimbledon tournament. Henin became known for her explosive and well-rounded game, especially her one-handed backhand, as well as her mental toughness in the biggest tournaments.

Henin was born on June 1, 1982, in Liège, Belgium. She turned professional on Jan. 1, 1999, at the age of 16. In 2002, she married Pierre-Yves Hardenne, a tennis coach, and played under the name Justine Henin-Hardenne until the couple separated in 2007. Then she resumed playing as Justine Henin. In 2008, at the age of 25, she announced her immediate retirement from the women’s tour. Henin was ranked number one in the world at the time. In 2009, she came out of retirement and returned to competitive tennis. Henin retired again in 2011.
