New York Rangers are a professional hockey team that plays in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Rangers compete in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference. The team plays its home games in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The Rangers entered the NHL in 1926. From 1942 to 1967, the team was one of the Original Six, the six teams that made up the NHL during a period that many have called the league’s Golden Age. The other five teams were the Boston Bruins, the Chicago Blackhawks, the Detroit Red Wings, the Montreal Canadiens, and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
New York won the Stanley Cup in 1928, in only its second season in the NHL. The Rangers won the cup again in 1933. Stars of the franchise’s early years included goalie Lorne Chabot, center Frank Boucher, defensemen Ching Johnson and Taffy Abel, and right winger Bill Cook and his brother, left winger Bun Cook.
The Rangers won the Stanley Cup in 1940. After that, they reached the finals only three times (1950, 1972, 1979) before winning the cup again in 1994, behind center Mark Messier, defenseman Brian Leetch, and goalie Mike Richter. New York reached the Stanley Cup finals in 2014, losing to the Los Angeles Kings. Recent stars of the Rangers have included defenseman Ryan McDonagh, goalie Henrik Lundqvist, and right winger Jaromir Jagr.
