Cyrus, Miley (1992-…), an American singer and actress, became a sensation in the television series “Hannah Montana.” The show aired from 2006 to 2011 on the Disney Channel and made Cyrus famous. In the series, she played a teenage girl who led a double life. During the day, she was Miley Stewart, a typical student. At night, Stewart became Hannah Montana, a pop music star. Cyrus’s success on the TV show led to recordings and sold-out concert performances. In 2016 and 2017, Cyrus was a coach on the singing-competition television show “The Voice.”
Cyrus was born on Nov. 23, 1992, in Franklin, Tennessee, and grew up on her parents’ farm outside Nashville. Her full name is Destiny Hope Cyrus. She acquired the nickname Miley as a child, shortened from “Smiley.” Her father is Billy Ray Cyrus, a popular country singer and actor. Miley Cyrus made her acting debut in 2003 on an episode of her father’s television series “Doc.”
Cyrus’s first four record albums all reached number one on the sales charts. These were the TV show soundtrack album Hannah Montana (2006); Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus (2007), which included a TV show soundtrack album and Cyrus’s first studio album; Breakout (2008); and the motion-picture soundtrack for Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009), in which Cyrus starred. Cyrus’s third studio album, Can’t Be Tamed, was released in 2010. Her fourth studio album, Bangerz (2013), was another number-one hit. Cyrus’s other albums include Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz (2015), Younger Now (2017), Plastic Hearts (2020), and Endless Summer Vacation (2023).
Cyrus’s hit songs include “See You Again” and “7 Things” (both 2008), “The Climb” and “Party in the U.S.A.” (both 2009), “Can’t Be Tamed” (2010), “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball” (both 2013), and “Flowers” (2023). In 2024, she won Grammy Awards for record of the year and best pop solo performance for “Flowers.” Cyrus writes some of her own songs.
Cyrus starred in a concert tour called “Best of Both Worlds” in 2007 and 2008 in which she performed both as Miley Cyrus and as Hannah Montana. The tour was documented in a popular 3-D concert film, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert (2008). Cyrus starred in the motion pictures The Last Song (2010) and LOL (2012). She provided the voice for Penny in the animated film Bolt (2008). Cyrus also acted in the television miniseries Crisis in Six Scenes (2016). Cyrus was married to the Australian actor Liam Hemsworth from 2018 to 2020.
