Glover, << GLUHV uhr, >> Danny (1947-…), is an American actor, motion-picture director, and political activist. Glover is known for playing a variety of characters in movies ranging from historical and literary dramas to action films.
Danny Lebern Glover was born on July 22, 1947, in San Francisco. He graduated from San Francisco State College (now San Francisco State University) in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. Glover received training at the Black Actors Workshop of the American Conservatory Theater and the Shelton Actors Lab, both in San Francisco. Glover made his motion-picture debut in Escape from Alcatraz (1979). He made his Broadway debut in “Master Harold” … and the Boys (1982), by the South African playwright Athol Fugard .
One of Glover’s most popular roles was as Los Angeles police officer Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon series of action films (1987, 1989, 1992, and 1998), in which he co-starred with Mel Gibson . Glover’s other notable films include Places in the Heart (1984); Silverado, Witness, and The Color Purple (all 1985); To Sleep with Anger (1990); A Rage in Harlem and Grand Canyon (both 1991); Bopha! and The Saint of Fort Washington (both 1993); Beloved (1998); The Royal Tenenbaums (2001); Saw (2004); Dreamgirls (2006); Honeydripper (2007); Be Kind Rewind and Blindness (both 2008); 2012 (2009); Death at a Funeral (2010); Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight (2013); and Beyond the Lights and Rage (both 2014).
Glover has also performed extensively on television. He won acclaim for his portrayal of the South African antiapartheid leader Nelson Mandela in Mandela (1987), and for his roles in the miniseries Lonesome Dove (1989) and the movie Freedom Song (2000). Glover also directed the made-for-television movies Override (1994) and Just a Dream (2002).
