Cable News Network (CNN) became the first 24-hour cable news channel. It was founded in 1980 by the American broadcasting executive Ted Turner.
CNN began broadcasting through Turner’s company Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., in Atlanta. In 1985, the network began broadcasting overseas. It formed CNN International in 1992. CNN owns news bureaus in cities throughout the United States and in many locations around the world. These bureaus are especially important for CNN’s coverage of local breaking news. CNN distributes programming internationally through news feeds sent to specific regions of the world. The network also offers a subscription service through which TV stations, cable channels, and international affiliates may purchase news content.
CNN features a variety of interview, discussion, business, personal finance, and medical shows. Notable CNN reporters and personalities have included Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper, and Larry King.
In 1982, CNN launched the companion network CNN2, later called CNN Headline News and now called HLN. This network originally featured a 24-hour cycle of 30-minute news segments and reports. Later, it also began offering legal, entertainment, and discussion programs.
CNN’s website is called CNN.com. It is one of the most popular news websites in the world. CNN also operates other websites, closed-circuit networks, and radio networks. A Spanish-language edition of the CNN TV network offered in the United States and Latin America is called CNN en Español.
