Warner, Mark Robert (1954-…), a Democrat from Virginia, became a United States senator in 2009. He had earlier served as governor of Virginia from 2002 to 2006. As governor, Warner worked to improve public schools and to promote economic development.
Warner was born in Indianapolis on Dec. 15, 1954. He received a B.A. degree in political science from George Washington University, in Washington, D.C., in 1977. In 1980, he received a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School. Warner built a successful business career through his work and investments in cellular telephone systems and information technology. Warner was the chairman of the Virginia Democratic Party from 1993 to 1995, and he ran unsuccessfully for a U.S. Senate seat in 1996.
In 2008, Warner delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. That November, he won election to the U.S. Senate. Warner took office in January 2009. He was reelected in 2014 and 2020. In the Senate, Warner has served on the chamber’s committees on the Budget; Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; and Finance.
