De La Hoya, Oscar

De La Hoya, Oscar (1973-…), an American boxer, ranks among the greatest fighters in the history of the sport. De La Hoya won world championships in six weight classes. He ranks among the all-time money winners in boxing history. De La Hoya has been nicknamed the “Golden Boy.”

De La Hoya won his first world championship in 1994, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior lightweight title. He won the WBO lightweight title later that year and the International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight titles in 1995. In 1996, De La Hoya won the World Boxing Council (WBC) junior welterweight title. He won the WBC welterweight title in 1997. De La Hoya won the WBC junior middleweight championship in 2001. In 2004, he won the WBO middleweight title.

De La Hoya was born on Feb. 4, 1973, in Los Angeles of Mexican immigrant parents. He won his first amateur title at the age of 15 and won the gold medal in the lightweight class at the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. De La Hoya turned professional later in 1992. He announced his retirement in 2009.
