Bennet, Michael (1964-…), became a United States senator in 2009. Bennet, a Democrat, represents Colorado. He was named to fill the seat of Senator Ken Salazar, who became secretary of the interior in the administration of President Barack Obama. In 2010, Bennet won election to a full term in the Senate. He was reelected in 2016 and 2022.
Michael Farrand Bennet was born on Nov. 28, 1964, in New Delhi, India, where his father was serving as an aide to a U.S. ambassador. Bennet graduated from Wesleyan University in Connecticut in 1987. He received a J.D. degree from Yale Law School in 1993. He worked as a lawyer in private practice before serving as counsel to the deputy attorney general in the administration of President Bill Clinton.
In 1997, Bennet began working as a director for a private investment company. He then worked as chief-of-staff for Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. In 2005, Bennet became the superintendent of the Denver Public Schools. In that post, he was widely praised for helping improve student performance and teacher compensation.
Bennet has served as a member of the Senate committees on Finance; Intelligence; and Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry. From May 2019 to February 2020, Bennet campaigned unsuccessfully for the Democratic Party’s 2020 nomination for president of the United States.
