Geithner, << GYT nur, >> Timothy Franz (1961-…), served as United States secretary of the treasury from 2009 to 2013. President Barack Obama appointed him to the post. Prior to becoming treasury secretary, Geithner had served as president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Geithner was born on Aug. 18, 1961, in New York City. He earned a bachelor’s degree in government and Asian studies from Dartmouth College in 1983. Two years later, he completed a master’s degree in international economics and East Asian studies at Johns Hopkins University.
After graduation, Geithner worked for Kissinger Associates, a private consulting firm founded by former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. From 1988 to 2001, Geithner held several positions in the U.S. Department of the Treasury. In 2001, he became the director of a department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C. He joined the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in 2003. In his role as the bank’s president, and later as treasury secretary, Geithner helped shape government efforts to shore up troubled financial institutions. Many financial firms had suffered huge losses during a global economic crisis that began in 2008.
