Wimbledon is the popular name for the Championships, the third of the four annual major professional tennis tournaments that make up the grand slam. The other three are the Australian Open and the French Open, which are held before Wimbledon, and the US Open, which is held after Wimbledon.
The Championships are held in July in the London suburb of Wimbledon. The tournament is the only grand slam event held on courts with a grass surface. Wimbledon is the oldest of the grand slam events. Men’s competition began in 1877, and women’s competition in 1884.
The most successful player in Wimbledon history was Czech-born Martina Navratilova, who won nine women’s singles titles. Roger Federer of Switzerland holds the modern men’s record with eight titles.
