US Open is one of the four annual professional tennis tournaments that make up the grand slam. The other tournaments are the Australian Open, the French Open, and the Championships (Wimbledon).
The US Open is the last of the grand slam tournaments held each year, ending in September. The tournament is held in Flushing Meadows in New York City. The US Open and the Australian Open are the only two grand slam tournaments played on hard courts, rather than clay as at the French Open and grass as at Wimbledon.
The US Open began men’s competition in 1881 and women’s competition in 1887. After being held at several sites, men’s and women’s singles moved to Forest Hills in New York City in 1935. The tournament moved to Flushing Meadows in 1978. The most important matches are played in Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium. Bill Tilden of the United States holds the record for the most men’s singles victories with seven titles. Norwegian-born Molla Bjurstedt (later Molla Bjurstedt Mallory) holds the women’s singles record with eight championships.
