Ponting, Ricky (1974-…), became one of the greatest batsmen in the history of Australian cricket. Ponting, a right-handed batsman, holds many Australian career records for runs. He also ranks near the top in many categories in international cricket. He is second only to Sachin Tendulkar of India in career centuries (100 runs by a single batsman in an innings). Ponting was also a brilliant fielder.
During the early 2000’s, Ponting received several awards as cricketer of the year. They include International Cricket Council Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007 and Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2006. In international competition, Ponting has served as the captain of the Australian cricket team in One Day International (2002-2011), Twenty20 International (2005-2009), and Test cricket (2004-2011). As captain, he led Australia to World Cup championships in 2003 and 2007.
Ricky Thomas Ponting was born on Dec. 19, 1974, in Launceston, Tasmania. He was a teenage sensation, making his First Class debut for Tasmania against South Australia in 1992 at the age of 17. Ponting made his One Day International and Test debuts for Australia in 1995. In 2008, Ponting scored his 10,000th Test match run, becoming the third Australian after Allan Border and Steve Waugh to reach this milestone. Ponting retired in December 2012.
