Malkin, Evgeni

Malkin, Evgeni (1986-…), a Russian-born hockey player, is a star in the National Hockey League (NHL). Malkin, a center, plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Malkin won the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s scoring leader for the 2008-2009 season with 113 points (35 goals and 78 assists) and the 2011-2012 season with 109 points (50 goals and 59 assists). In 2007, he won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL Rookie of the Year. In 2012, Malkin won the Ted Lindsay Award as the league’s most outstanding player, as chosen by his fellow NHL players, and the Hart Memorial Trophy as the player most valuable to his team.

Malkin was born on July 31, 1986, in Magnitogorsk, U.S.S.R. (now Russia). He played with the Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the Russian Super League from 2003 through 2006. Malkin was selected by Pittsburgh as the second player taken in the 2004 NHL draft behind fellow Russian Alexander Ovechkin. However, Malkin could not join Pittsburgh because of a contract dispute between the Russian Hockey Federation and the NHL.

Malkin finally signed with Pittsburgh in 2006. He made an immediate impact in the NHL with his skating, passing, and scoring. He helped lead Pittsburgh to the 2009, 2016, and 2017 Stanley Cup championships. In 2009, Malkin was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs.
