Fleming, Peggy

Fleming, Peggy (1948-…), a champion American figure skater, dominated world figure skating during the 1960’s. Fleming won five national championships, three world championships, and the gold medal at the 1968 Winter Olympic Games.

Peggy Gale Fleming was born on July 27, 1948, in San Jose, California. She began skating at the age of 9. Fleming won five consecutive United States women’s figure skating titles beginning in 1964. She was the North American champion in 1967 and won world championships in 1966, 1967, and 1968. Her victory at the 1968 Olympics was the only gold medal won by the entire American Olympic team. Fleming was named 1968 Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press.

Fleming retired from competitive skating in 1968 but continued her career by performing on television specials and starring in touring ice shows. She has also served as a skating commentator on television.

In 1998, Fleming was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had successful surgery and then became active as a spokesperson for early detection of the disease. Fleming and her husband, the retired American dermatologist Greg Jenkins, own and operate the Fleming Jenkins Vineyards & Winery near Los Gatos, California.
