Brown, Scott

Brown, Scott (1959-…), served as a United States senator from 2010 to 2013. Brown, a Republican, represented Massachusetts . In 2010, he won a special election to fill the Senate seat that had been held by Edward M. (Ted) Kennedy , who died in 2009. Between Kennedy’s death and Brown’s election, Democrat Paul Kirk, Jr., held the seat on an interim (temporary) basis. Brown had previously served in the Massachusetts state Senate.

Scott Philip Brown was born on Sept. 12, 1959, in Kittery, Maine. After attending high school in Wakefield, Massachusetts, Brown enrolled at Tufts University. As an undergraduate, he joined the Massachusetts National Guard . He graduated from Tufts in 1981 and received a degree from Boston College Law School in 1985. He then went to work as an attorney for a private law firm.

From 1992 to 1998, Brown held local government positions in the community of Wrentham, Massachusetts. He then won election to the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He served in the House until 2004, when he won a special election for a state Senate seat. In the Massachusetts legislature, Brown became known for his work supporting crime victims and military veterans. Brown also retained a position in the National Guard, where he became a lieutenant colonel in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps, the legal branch of the National Guard.

Ted Kennedy, a Democrat, had represented Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate from 1962 until his death on Aug. 25, 2009. In January 2010, Brown defeated state Attorney General Martha Coakley, the Democratic candidate, in a special election to complete the remainder of Kennedy’s Senate term. Brown’s victory surprised many observers because Democrats had long dominated Massachusetts politics. In November 2012, Brown lost to Democrat Elizabeth Warren in a bid for a full Senate term.

In 2013, Brown announced that he had moved to New Hampshire, where he owned a vacation home. In 2014, he won a campaign for the Republican nomination for U.S. senator for New Hampshire. He was defeated in the general election by incumbent Senator Jeanne Shaheen. From 2017 to 2021, Brown served under President Donald J. Trump as the U.S. ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa . Brown later served as dean of New England Law, a private law school in Boston.
