Gerrard, Steven

Gerrard, Steven (1980-…), was an English soccer star. Soccer is called football in much of the world. He gained international fame playing for Liverpool FC in the English Premier League (EPL)—England’s highest soccer league—and for the English national team in international competition. Gerrard, a midfielder, was regarded as one of the best all-around players in the world. He won several Player of the Year awards for his play in the EPL. He received the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Club Player of the Year award in 2005.

Steven George Gerrard was born on May 30, 1980, in Whiston, Merseyside, a suburb of Liverpool. He signed with Liverpool FC when he was 17 years old. He made his debut for Liverpool in 1998. He first played on England’s national team in 2000. Gerrard became the captain of the Liverpool team in 2003. He led Liverpool to victory in several cup competitions, including the 2005 UEFA Champions League, the top tournament in European football. Gerrard represented England at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, scoring two goals, and at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, scoring one goal and serving as team captain. In 2015, Gerrard left Liverpool to play for the LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer (MLS), the highest men’s professional soccer league in the United States and Canada. He retired from playing soccer in 2016. From 2018 to 2021, Gerrard was manager at Rangers Football Club, a leading Scottish soccer club. In 2021 and 2022, he was manager at Aston Villa, a leading English soccer club.
