Henry, Thierry << ahn REE, TYAIR ree >> (1977-…), a French soccer star, became one of the sport’s greatest players. Soccer is called football in much of the world. Henry, a striker, gained international fame as a skilled goal scorer. His speed and exciting style of play made him a fan favorite. He began his playing career with the French club Monaco, but he had his most notable seasons with the English Premier League (EPL) team Arsenal FC. FC stands for football club. The Premier League is England’s highest soccer league.

Thierry Daniel Henry was born on Aug. 17, 1977, in Les Ulis, Essonne, a suburb of Paris. He began playing club soccer at the age of 7. He made his debut for AS Monaco FC (Association Sportive de Monaco Football Club) in 1994.

Henry played for Monaco from 1994 to 1999. He joined the Italian team Juventus FC in January 1999 but transferred to Arsenal in August. From 1999 to 2007, Henri led Arsenal to two EPL league titles, including an undefeated season in 2003-2004.

In 2007, Henry moved to FC Barcelona. While he played for Barcelona, the team won two league championships in La Liga, Spain’s top soccer league. In 2009, the club also won the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League title.

Henry played on the French national team from 1998 to 2010. His career with the French team included a World Cup championship in 1998; a UEFA European Football Championship in 2000; and a second-place finish in the 2006 World Cup, which was won by Italy. After the 2009-2010 season, Henry signed with the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer (MLS), the highest men’s professional soccer league in the United States and Canada. In December 2014, Henry announced he was retiring as a player to become a television sports commentator in the United Kingdom. In 2020, Henry coached the MLS’s Montreal Impact (now called CF Montreal).
