Nye, Bill

Nye, Bill (1955-…), is an American science educator, engineer , comedian , and inventor . He is best known for his television persona, Bill Nye the Science Guy. Nye originated the character on the Seattle -area radio station KJR and variety television program “Almost Live!” (1984-1999). He later developed the character into the Emmy Award-winning educational television program “Bill Nye the Science Guy” (1992-1998).

Nye’s contributions as an engineer and inventor include helping to design equipment for skimming oil slicks at sea. He also contributed to the design of special sundials carried by the United States rovers Spirit and Opportunity, launched to Mars in 2003. Nye holds several U.S. patents . These include patents for an educational lens used in the teaching of optics , a ballet toe shoe, and a digital version of the abacus . An abacus is an ancient Chinese device used in arithmetic.

William Sanford Nye was born on Nov. 27, 1955, in Washington, D.C. As a student, he excelled in math. He was also a skilled tutor. In 1973, Nye’s interests led him to pursue the study of mechanical engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. After graduating from Cornell in 1977, he began his career as an engineer for the Boeing Company in Seattle. A few years later, Nye began to work as a stand-up comedian at night. He was still working by day as an engineer. A talent for making science entertaining led to his television career.

Following the end of his first television program, Nye appeared on various TV shows. He appeared both as an actor and as an advocate for science. He also remained active as an engineer. From 2005 to 2010, he served as vice president of the Planetary Society. The society is a public organization that advocates for space exploration. In 2010, Nye became the executive director of the society. In June 2019, the Planetary Society launched the LightSail 2 aboard SpaceX ‘s Falcon Heavy rocket. It became the first steerable solar sail spacecraft to orbit Earth using sunlight as its power source. Nye remains involved in science education and literacy through his work as a television writer, children’s book author, and public spokesman.
