Blumenthal, Richard (1946-…), became a United States senator in 2011. Blumenthal, a Democrat, represents Connecticut. Prior to his election as senator, Blumenthal served as the state’s attorney general.
Blumenthal was born in New York City on Feb. 13, 1946. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College in 1967 and a law degree from Yale Law School in 1973. After law school, Blumenthal clerked for Harry Blackmun, an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. In 1977, Blumenthal was named United States attorney for the district of Connecticut. He served in the state House of Representatives from 1984 to 1987, and in the state Senate from 1987 to 1990. During his time as a state legislator, Blumenthal also worked as an attorney in private practice.
In 1990, Blumenthal was elected attorney general of Connecticut. He won reelection in 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006. As attorney general, Blumenthal sued the federal government for failing to enforce environmental laws. He also worked to reform practices in the insurance and mortgage-lending industries. Blumenthal won election to the U.S. Senate in 2010. He took office in 2011. He was reelected to the Senate in 2016 and 2022.
