Hoeven << HOH vuhn >>, John (1957-…), became a United States senator in 2011. Hoeven, a Republican, represents North Dakota. Prior to his election to the Senate, Hoeven had served as the state’s governor.

John Henry Hoeven III was born on March 13, 1957, in Bismarck, North Dakota. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in 1979. In 1981, he received a master’s degree in business administration from Northwestern University. He later worked as an officer at a bank in Minot, North Dakota. From 1993 to 2000, Hoeven served as chief executive officer and president of the Bank of North Dakota.

In 2000, Hoeven won election as North Dakota’s governor. He was reelected in 2004 and 2008. Hoeven became the state’s first governor to win election to three four-year terms. As governor, Hoeven won praise for helping attract new businesses and industries to the state. Hoeven won election to the U.S. Senate in November 2010. The following month, he stepped down as governor. Lieutenant Governor Jack Dalrymple, a Republican, succeeded Hoeven in the position. Hoeven won reelection to the Senate in 2016 and 2022.
