Toomey, Pat

Toomey, Pat (1961-…), served as a United States senator from 2011 to 2023. Toomey, a Republican, represented Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the Senate, Toomey had served in the U.S. House of Representatives and worked as a businessman.

Patrick Joseph Toomey was born on Nov. 17, 1961, in Providence, Rhode Island. He earned a bachelor’s degree in government from Harvard University in 1984. Following graduation, Toomey worked as an investment banker. In 1991, Toomey and his brothers started a restaurant business in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

In 1998, Toomey won election to the U.S. House, where he represented the Allentown area. He took office in 1999 and was reelected in 2000 and 2002. As a congressman, he worked to lower taxes and reduce government spending. From 2004 to 2009, Toomey served as president and chief executive officer of the Club for Growth, an antitax organization.

Toomey won election to the U.S. Senate in 2010. As a senator, Toomey supported cutting taxes, reducing business regulations, and improving services for military veterans. He was reelected in 2016. He later became one of the Senate’s chief Republican critics of President Donald J. Trump’s efforts to change the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. Toomey retired in January 2023.
