Redbone coonhound is a hunting dog with a solid red coat. It has short, somewhat coarse fur. The redbone coonhound ranges in size from 21 to 27 inches (53 to 69 centimeters) tall at the shoulder. It averages 50 to 70 pounds (23 to 32 kilograms). Females are somewhat smaller.
The redbone coonhound is surefooted and swift. Hunters prize the dog for its ability to track raccoons and other small game and chase them up trees. It also is known for being an even-tempered pet. American breeders developed the redbone coonhound from red foxhounds. It became recognizable as a distinct breed in the 1800’s.
