Bachmann, Michele (1956-…), served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 2007 to 2015. Bachmann, a Republican from Minnesota, represented a district north of the Twin Cities. In 2011, Bachmann declared her candidacy for the 2012 Republican nomination for president. She withdrew from the race in January 2012, after a poor finish in the Iowa caucuses.
Michele Amble was born on April 6, 1956, in Waterloo, Iowa. Her family later moved to Anoka, Minnesota. She received a bachelor’s degree from Winona State University in 1978. That same year, she married Marcus Bachmann, who operates a Christian counseling center. The couple have five children.
Michele Bachmann received a law degree from Oral Roberts University in 1986. In 1988, she earned a Master of Laws degree from the College of William and Mary. After completing her law studies, Bachmann worked as an attorney for the United States Tax Court in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 2000, Bachmann won a campaign for the Minnesota state Senate. In 2004 and 2005, she served as the state Senate’s assistant minority leader.
In 2006, Bachmann won election to the U.S. House of Representatives. She began serving in 2007. As a congresswoman, Bachmann served on the Financial Services Committee and the Select Committee on Intelligence. She called for lower taxes and was strongly opposed to abortion. About 2010, she developed a following among conservative activist groups that became known as the tea party movement (see Tea party movement ). Bachmann did not seek reelection to the House in November 2014.
