Rose, Derrick (1988-…), ranks among the most exciting players in National Basketball Association (NBA) history. Rose stands 6 feet 3 inches (191 centimeters) tall and plays guard. He became noted for his playmaking and for his acrobatic moves and slam dunks. Rose, playing for the Chicago Bulls, was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the 2010-2011 season. He averaged about 25 points, 4 rebounds, and 8 assists per game and became the youngest player in NBA history to receive the award.
Derrick Martell Rose was born on Oct. 4, 1988, in Chicago. In high school, he led Chicago’s Simeon Career Academy to two Illinois state championships. Rose attended the University of Memphis for the 2007-2008 season, helping the school reach the finals of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament.
Rose left college after one year to play in the NBA. The Bulls chose him as the first overall selection in the 2008 draft. Rose was named NBA Rookie of the Year for the 2008-2009 season. He also made three consecutive All-Star teams, beginning with the 2009-2010 season. Rose missed the 2012-2013 season and most of the 2013-2014 season because of knee injuries.
Rose left Chicago to play for the New York Knicks in 2016. His play never returned to its preinjury levels, but he gained a reputation as a reliable and respected teammate. Rose later played, largely in a reserve role, for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, and Memphis Grizzlies.
