Waugh, Mark (1965-…), was an Australian cricket star. Waugh was an outstanding batsman, a brilliant fielder, and an effective bowler. He was a middle-order batsman and a right-hand bat, and bowled right-hand medium.
With his twin brother, Steve, Waugh helped lead Australia to 15 of its world-record 16 consecutive Test victories and to the 1999 cricket World Cup title. Test matches and One Day International (ODI) matches represent the highest level of international cricket competition. Mark and Steve set a world record of 464 runs for fifth wicket partnerships for New South Wales against Western Australia in 1990-1991. Mark was named Sheffield Shield cricketer of the year in 1987-1988 and 1989-1990. The annual award is the highest individual honor in Australian cricket.
Mark Edward Waugh was born on June 2, 1965, in Canterbury, Sydney, New South Wales. In domestic cricket, Waugh played for New South Wales from 1985 until he retired in 2004 and for Essex in England from 1988 to 2002. Waugh was named a Wisden cricketer of the year in 1991. This award given for outstanding play the previous year in England. In international competition, Waugh made his One Day International debut against Pakistan in 1988. He made his Test debut against England in 1991. His career was marred by the revelation that he had accepted money from an Indian bookmaker during a 1994-1995 tour of Sri Lanka.
Dean Waugh, Mark’s younger brother, played first-class and List A cricket in Australia during the 1990’s.
