Waugh, Steve (1965-…), was an outstanding Australian cricket player. He was captain of the 1999 Australian team that won the cricket World Cup and also played on the team that won the World Cup for Australia in 1987.
Waugh played in 168 Test matches, a world record at the time. Test matches and One Day International (ODI) matches represent the highest level of international cricket competition. Waugh served as the country’s Test captain from 1999 through 2003. Waugh was ranked as the world’s leading Test batsman in 1995-1996.
With his twin brother, Mark, Steve led Australia to 15 of their world-record 16 consecutive Test wins in 1999. Mark and Steve set a world record of 464 runs for fifth wicket partnerships for New South Wales against Western Australia in 1990-1991.
Stephen Rodger Waugh was born on June 2, 1965, in Canterbury, Sydney, New South Wales. Waugh played middle-order batsman. His batting style was right hand and his bowling style was right-arm medium.
Domestically, Waugh played first-class and List A cricket in Australia from 1984 until he retired in 2004. He also played for Ireland in 1998 and in England for Somerset in 1987-1988 and for Kent in 2002. He was selected Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1989 in England and Cricketer of the Year in Australia in 2000-2001. He was also Cricketer of the Year in India in 1988 and in South Africa in 1994 and 1997. In 2004, Waugh was named Australian of the Year. He was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009.
In international competition, Waugh made his One Day International debut in 1986 against New Zealand and his Test debut in 1985 against India. He wrote an autobiography, Out of My Comfort Zone (2005).
Steve’s younger brother, Dean Waugh, played first-class and List A cricket in Australia during the 1990’s.
