Newton, Cam (1989-…), is a star quarterback in the National Football League (NFL). A quarterback leads a football team’s offense (see Football (The offensive team); Football (Advancing the ball)). An outstanding passer, Newton is also an effective runner.
In 2011, Newton set numerous NFL records in his first year in the league, playing for the Carolina Panthers. He became the first NFL player to gain more than 4,000 passing yards (4,051) and more than 500 yards (706) rushing in one season. He was also the first NFL quarterback with 14 rushing touchdowns in a season. Newton was named the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year and the Pepsi NFL and Sporting News Rookie of the Year for 2011. Newton was named the NFL Most Valuable Player and the Offensive Player of the Year for 2015. In 2016, Newton rushed for his 44th touchdown, setting a career record for NFL quarterbacks.
Cameron Jerrell Newton was born on May 11, 1989, in College Park, Georgia. Newton attended the University of Florida in 2007 and 2008. He then transferred to Blinn College, a community college in Brenham, Texas, in 2009. Newton enrolled at Auburn University as a junior in 2010. He led Auburn to the Southeast Conference championship that year and a national championship when Auburn defeated the University of Oregon. Newton won the Heisman Trophy in 2010 as the nation’s most outstanding college player.
Newton entered the NFL draft in 2011, skipping his senior year at Auburn. The draft is the process in which NFL teams choose players, usually amateurs from college programs. Carolina selected him as the first player taken in the draft. The Panthers released Newton in March 2020. In June, Newton signed with the New England Patriots. Newton played for the Patriots for one year, and the team released him in August 2021. Later in 2021, Newton rejoined the Panthers.
